A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

This game requires Java 11 or higher installed.

The Aslyum is a 7drl entry for 2023.

Final Jam Version 1.0.4

It is in the vein of Mario Maker, but for Roguelikes.

Players can design, test, and upload their own levels, to be played and rated by other players.  The editor offers quite a bit of flexibility in designing how things will behave in your level.

You can play uploaded levels without creating an account, but can't rate them, and your win/loss's don't contribute to their stats.

Creating an account is required to upload levels, but it can be done easily in game.

Changelog:
1.0.1  No code changes.  Repackaged to embed JRE for windows.

1.0.2 Bug Fix to things not appearing in editor.  Thanks Uthel.

1.0.3 Numerous bugfixes.  Very light tutorial on the Editor.

1.0.4 Small fixes.  Added sneaky Goblin, and Troll, several new tiles.

Is there a place to get some instructions on how to play, specifically controls?  I played a level that had a scroll of "blink" but I couldn't figure out how to use it.  And I got into the editor and could zoom in and out, but couldn't figure out how to pan the map around.

Edit:  I figured it out a little more.  Still, could use some more documentation – I really struggled trying to figure out how scrolls worked, since they have multiple "ranges" on them.  And I finally figured out you have to escape out of the current "brush" before you could click on items to edit them.

But I did manage to make a map and upload it. Hope you enjoy checking it out!

There isn't better document, sadly.  One of the last things  I was working on before time ran out was some tutorials through Toasts, which you probably saw in the editor.  It does sound like you figured it out in the end.

I agree there's some confusing values in some of the components available to the editor. It's something I want to clean up.  If you look in the 'Trolltown' level, you see a similar bit of confusion happened with the Fireball scroll, which has a range of 3, and a radius of 7(!!), so obviously things aren't clear enough.

I played and beat your level, it's a neat concept, though it took me a minute to figure out what you wanted me to do. Heh.  What was the second key for out of curiosity?

Oh, that second key was just left over from earlier tinkering with the level.  I probably should have deleted it.

One thing I'd suggest in the component editor would be that when you click the revealer it doesn't only show the fields you can edit but it also starts with a line or two of text about what the component does and what you're adjusting in the fields.  That would go a long way to helping level authors help themselves, and I suspect it would be pretty easy to implement.

Anyway, I hope you keep developing this. I love games that have a creative component to them.
